Within Hong Kong bentonite is used as a coating or lubricant for large construction drilling. The bentonite is mixed with water and used to coat the drills to make sure they are operating correctly. After the large holes are made in the ground the liquified bentonite is pumped out of the hole into large trucks. These trucks are transported to the Tseung Kwan O Area 137 Fill Bank where the liquified bentonite is then processed through a highly energy intensive method of pressurizing and effectively squeezing the water out of the bentonite. What is produced is dried blocks and slabs of material that can then be recycled and used again in different construction site within the drilling process.

The exact 'original' origin of the bentonite is unknown.
