In the 19th century, Yuen Chau was a major station for travelers and goods traded between Guangdong and Kowloon. By the late 20th century, this status had gradually diminished. In the 1970s, the government developed a new town in Shatin and carried out reclamation works on both sides of the Shatin Hoi. Yuen Chau Kok, which was originally located in the middle of the Sha Tin Hoi, became part of the land on the east coast. It was renamed Yuan Chau Kok because after the first stage of reclamation it was at a protruding angle towards the sea. However after the later stages of reclamation, there are no traces of this protrusion and only small hills remain.
