Cheung Chau is an island in Hong Kong. It was initially formed from the joining of two smaller islands. The shape of these islands interacted with the monsoon driven waves bringing sand to the shores, forming a sandspit. Over time the sand accumulated and the sandspit grew, reaching between the two islands and connecting to form a tombolo. You can see this history of sand in the shape of the south and north of Cheung Chau where the land is wide and tall, and the central area where the land is narrow and flat. This shape has earned Cheung Chau the alternate name of ‘Dumbbell Island’.
