This asphalt fragment, a mix of stone aggregate, filler, and bitumen, was found in the far northern fringe of Hong Kong, near old fish ponds and former agricultural areas of Mong Tseng Tsuen. Hastily built roads, like the one this sample came from, are poured directly onto compacted earth as a simple access path for local access. Without a base course or edge detail, they crumble rapidly and are incorporated into the nearby soils.
